The Jordan-Matthews softball team hosted Roanoke Rapids in the second round of the state playoffs on Friday. J-M entered the game with a perfect record at 24-0. That record was put to the test tonight in Siler City.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings of play, but Roanoke Rapids took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning off of a two run home-run by the right fielder. And then, the error bug struck. The Yellow Jackets committed three errors in the bottom of the fifth after J-M’s forced their fielders to play the bunt. Those errors combined with clutch hitting by Marshall Phillips, Dee DeCristofaro, and Caroline Webster had the Lady Jets leading 6-2 after five complete.
However, Roanoke Rapids would not go quietly. The error bug found J-M momentarily in the top of the sixth which led to a run for the yellow jackets and also extended the inning. Moments later Roanoke Rapids hits a grand slam to retake the lead at 7-6.
In the top of the seventh, the Lady Jets answered the call and scored two runs to lead 8-7 and held on for the thrilling victory. They advance to play South Granville in the third round on Tuesday.Click here for photos
