Northwood’s varsity girls basketball team defeated the Lady Bears from Chatham Central 73-44 in the Lee County Christmas Tournament on Monday evening. In order to reach the finals the Lady Chargers beat the likes of Southern Lee and a very good Union Pines team. Central’s route to the championship game went through Western Harnett and Overhills.
The finale for the 2014 Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic was a fast paced affair between Central and Northwood. The score was close early in the first quarter as the Lady Chargers led by a score of 14-9 but went on a 10-0 run to finish the first 24-9. They really never looked back from there. At halftime the score was 41-21 in favor of Northwood and the game ended with Northwood taking the trophy with a 73-44 victory.
Shontai Totten led the way for both teams in scoring with 19 points. Totten also had six assists and was the tournament MVP. Jasmine Atkins contributed 14 points with 7 rebounds for Northwood. Kristian Eanes had 11 points and was also named to the All-Tournament team. Jazanae Billings was also named to the All-tournament team for the Lady Chargers. Courtney Williamson was the leading scorer for the Lady Bears with 10 points. Matti Moore put in 6 points for Central as well and was also named to the All-tournament team.
