Northwood hosted Cardinal Gibbons in their final regular season game on Friday evening in Pittsboro. The Chargers entered the game with a 4-2 record in Big 8 conference play behind Southern and Orange. At the end of the night they improved their record to 5-2 after the 31-6 victory over the Crusaders.
After an initial three and out for Northwood to start the game, Jared Worley did what he does best and intercepted a Cardinal Gibbons pass attempt to give the Chargers the ball back with good field position. Ti Pinnix would then find Jalen Smith on the Gibbons sideline and Smith almost found the end zone after breaking a few tackles but was brought down at the one yard line. Kadarus Rone would punch it in for Northwood and they had the early 7-0 lead after the extra point by Tyler Whitaker at the 10:02 mark in the first quarter.
In Northwood’s next offensive possession they faced a 4th and 17 but Pinnix was able to find Kadarus Rone down the center of the field for a 30 yard touchdown pass. Whitaker again added the extra point and Northwood had a 14-0 lead with 7:02 left in the first quarter.
The Gibbons offense had a tough time getting going early in the game but put together a nice drive with some good passing from quarterback Wesley Wagner who replaced starting quarterback Logan Washle in the second quarter. Wagner was able to find Sean Nalesnik in the back corner of the end zone early in the second quarter to put the Crusaders on the board. It was 14-6 in favor of the Chargers at 10:02 in the second after the failed PAT and it looked like we might have a game on our hands.Click here for photos
However, Northwood would have nothing to do with that. They would score ten more points in the first half off of a Darius Cole 52 yard punt return and a Tyler Whitaker 16 yard field goal to lead 24-6 at half. Neither team would score in the third quarter but the Chargers added a late touchdown in the fourth with another Pinnix to Rone connection and sealed the 31-6 victory.
Cardinal Gibbons had a difficult time throughout the night trying to run inside against the defensive line of Northwood and the likes of Elijah Washington, Hunter Blackmon, Brady Koenning, Imoh Udoh, and Daquan Brooks.
With the win Northwood assured themselves a spot in the playoffs that begin next Friday but unfortunately it is a road game against Northern Guilford (9-1). We hope you travel to Greensboro next Friday to support your Chargers!
