Central football falls to Hobbton

Chatham Central hosted the Hobbton Wildcats out of Newton Grove on Friday evening in Bear Creek. Central showed glimpses of good football but were bitten by the turnover bug a few too many times.

Hobbton got on the scoreboard first and converted their two-point conversion to take the early 8-0 lead. In the next possession, The Bears were moving the ball well with quality runs from Caleb Beavers when a 3rd down pass attempt deflected off of a Central receiver and landed perfectly in the hands of the Hobbton cornerback who returned it for a touchdown and the Wildcats had a 15-0 lead.

Chatham Central’s next drive featured more of the same with Beavers carrying the load. With the ball in their own half and sixteen yards to go on third down, Beavers picked up 30 yards down to 30 yard line for a much needed first down for the Bears. The drive stalled with 1:00 left in the first quarter.

LittleHobbton drove down the field for their third score of the game with 9:56 to go in the half, 21-0. Central’s next drive again had glimpses of quality with quarterback Hunter Little extending it with a pass on third down to receiver Josh Williams for a first down. Two plays later Little completed another pass on a tight-end dump to Tyler Coley, but Coley was bumped by a teammate while fighting for more yardage which resulted in a fumble. Yet another drive that looked as if may result in points for Central was halted early.

The Bears defense came up strong against the Wildcats’ next drive and gave the football back to the offense. Facing a fourth down in their next offensive possession, Little converted on a fake punt with a ten yard gain. The drive gets to 25 yard line but again Central couldn’t get points and turn it over on downs to Hobbton. At half Central trailed 21-0.

Central started the second half with the ball and continued to drive the ball down the field with their running game. However, there was another deflected pass that was returned for a touchdown and the Wildcats led  27-0 with 10:04 left in the third.

Hobbton scored again with 7:51 in third to extend their lead to 34-0. They later blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to lead 41-0 with 6:39 on the clock in the third quarter. At the end of three quarters of play it was 48-0 in favor of Hobbton.

The ball just didn’t bounce their way on this night and Central lost 56-8 in the end. Tre Edwards added a late touchdown for the Bears on an 80 yard run. Alongside Beavers, Luke Garner had a quality performance on both sides of the ball making numerous tackles and leading the way for Beavers as a fullback for the Bears. Daniel Gonzalez and Cameron Person were also in on a number of tackles for Central.
